Today’s double-dose of MISSION STAFF MONDAY shines a light on our Mental Performance Consultant team of veterans! Why have two you say? Well, Team BC is a large bunch of fine folks looking to perform their best. Carl and Dave are your guys!
MEET CARL NIENHUIS - MENTAL PERFORMANCE CONSULTANT
A mental performance consultant by trade, and additionally for the Team BC Mission Staff, Carl is truly a wealth of knowledge and experience for the athletes heading to Red Deer in 2019. As a member of Team BC Mission Staff since 2013, Carl has been ‘around the block’ and he is excited to be back – bringing his drum as he tells us (see photo for explanation).
As husband and father of five at home, Carl leads a busy life outside work and Team BC. When he’s not building Lego mansions suitable to house Barbie and her friends, Carl teaches in the University of the Fraser Valley’s Kinesiology department. He is constantly researching the natures of competition, sport and play as part of PhD studies, and he actively consults and counsels’ numerous athletes and performers across a wide-range of disciplines and competitive levels.
A wise a knowledgeable man such as Carl does not give up too many fun facts… but we got a few for those of you who are interested:
- Favourite Colour: Green and Orange (what’s the reason for two Carl…?)
- Favourite Food: Ice Cream (okay we’re into this)
- Nickname: C-Note
- Favourite Sports Team: Never had one! (who is this man of mystery? He did admit to picking Team Canada and Team BC if pressed…)
Carl’s performance coaching philosophy is built on seeking to experience meaning through appreciating and responding to others and to the demands of the moment. Aside from a few years spent in Ottawa while completing graduate studies in sport psychology, Carl has spent the majority of his life nestled in BC’s beautiful Fraser Valley.
