Coach Requirements - Canada Games

In accordance with the Canada Games Council policy, Team BC coaches must by fully NCCP Level 3 certified (or the equivalent in the NCCP competition stream) in order to be eligible to coach at the Games.

Team BC and ViaSport are responsible to ensure all coaches meet minimum certification requirements.  An exemption will be granted only if a coach is NCCP Level 2 certified.

Team BC also requires managers to have NCCP Level 1 Theory or "trained" status in the Making Ethics Decisions module in order to be eligible to serve as a manager for Team BC t the Games.

Only provincial/territorial team coaches and managers as outlined in the technical package for each sport and accredited by the Host Society may coach athletes at the Games (in training or competition).

Apprentice Coach Program

The purpose of the Canada Games apprentice coach program is to provide aboriginal coaches and female coaches with a practical and integrated major national multi-sport Games experience.  Selected coaches have direct involvement in preparation and competition and receive support from an identified mentor coach throughout the duration of the program.

View the Apprentice Coach Program Guidelines on the Canada Games Council website.

This program provides the opportunity for each province and territory to send up to 2 female coaches and 2 aboriginal coaches to the Canada Games in apprenticeship roles. A Provincial Sport Organization can apply to ViaSport to participate in this program.

Certification and Support

The Advanced Coaching Diploma Program offered by the network of Canadian Sport Institutes and Centres predominantly targets coaches working with Training-to-Train and Training-to-Compete athletes, which may include Canada Games, Western Canada Summer Games, and provincial team head coaches.

There is a bursary available for ACD graduates who are selected to coach Team BC at a Canada Games or Western Canada Summer Games. The purpose of the bursary is to raise the qualification standard for Team BC coaches and recognize the commitment made in coaching at the Games.

The International Coaching School (ICS), hosted by Canadian Sport Institute, provides coaches with two different opportunities to become world-class leaders. The two streams of the ICS are the Sport Performance Coaching Certificate (SPCC) and the High Performance Coach Advance (HPCA).

viaSport works in collaboration with Team BC to provide Canada Games coaches with appropriate resources and educational opportunities leading up to and at the Games.

viaSport is the hub for all multi-sport coaching courses in BC.  Team BC coaches should contact their Provincial Sport Organization (PSO) to ensure they have met the required training and certification levels to attend the Games.  If a coach is unsure about what certification he/she currently has, viaSport will verify their credits with the Coaching Association of Canada and can assist coaches with developing a certification plan.  Also, there are a number of bursaries and grants that may assist coaches completing NCCP courses prior to the Games.
