Team BC selects Raben Dommann as flag bearer for the Closing Ceremony
Team BC has selected Raben Dommann to carry BC’s flag in the 2017 Canada Summer Games Closing Ceremony in Winnipeg.
The North Vancouver swimmer powered his way to eight medals, including five golds in the Pan Am Pool, part of the BC swim team’s 52-medal haul at the Games.
He won all the freestyle long distance races in Winnipeg: 400m, 800m and 1500m. Then on Saturday morning, in the final men’s event of the Games, he won the 5000m race – swimming 100 laps in under 57 minutes. He also won a bronze in the 200m freestyle race.
In addition to his individual races, Dommann contributed to a trio of medals (gold, silver and bronze) in relays with his teammates.
The 16-year-old has been winning medals on the international scene including three medals at the 2017 UANA (Union Americana de Natacion) Pan American Open Water championships. He has earned more than 50 medals at BC provincial championships over the last five years.
“Raben was a tremendous leader on our swim team this week and was willing to step in any role on the team,” said Rob Needham, Team BC Chef de Mission. “In addition tohis phenomenal podium performances, Raben’s leadership and positive attitude, certainly contributed to Team BC’ success in the pool in Winnipeg.”
Dommann said he enjoyed his time in Winnipeg. In particular, he appreciated the opportunity to train with Para and Special Olympic athletes. “I love it so much. I’ve never trained with Special Olympics or Para athletes before,” said Dommann. “It’s really cool. Every time, I watch them race, I get so pumped up, for my next race. It’s incredible.”
As for his performances in the pool, Dommann said he’s pleased with his gold medals in the 400m, 800m and 1500m freestyle races. “That was my goal coming into the meet just to get on the top of the podium for the 4, 8 and the 15. I am stoked. I couldn’t be happier.”
Dommann was born in South Africa and moved to Australia when he was six. His family moved to BC seven years ago.
