Team BC Results Recap Aug 15
It was another great day in the pool for Team BC as swimmers collectively brought in nine gold, 10 silver and seven bronze medals for a team total of 26 medals. In the morning session Special Olympics swimmer Jesse Shade won his fifth gold in the 50m breaststroke in a time of 37.04. Soon after, the Team BC men dominated the 800m Freestyle as Andrew Woinoski (Coquitlam) took gold in 8:16.59 and teammate Ethan Phillips (Kamloops) took silver in 8:22.30. In the afternoon session things got started with the 4x50m freestyle relays. Team BC women Wendy Yang (Burnaby), Jessie Gibson (Abbotsford), Meredith Levorson (Coldstream) and Mackenzie Padington (Campbell River) combined for gold in 1:42.91, while the men’s relay team took home silver. Molly Gowans (Victoria) put on another great individual performance today winning gold in the 800m freestyle and silver in the 200m freestyle. Colin Gilbert (Kamloops), Tai Long Singh (Point Roberts) and Josh Zakala (Kelowna) also topped the podium today winning gold in the 200m freestyle, 100m butterfly and 200m IM, respectively. In para swimming, Aimee Brennan (Surrey) dominated with a gold in the women’s 200m para IM in 3:08.41, while Ian Ralston (Campbell River) did the same in the men’s 200m para IM (2:47.67).
Team BC triathlon continued the medal trend today winning gold in the men’s relay in 1:01:22, while the women took silver in 1:09.42. Brodie Marshall (Vancouver) anchored the men’s team thanks to the strong start by Michael Milic (Delta) and Brennen Smith (Victoria). Desirae Ridenour (Cowichan Bay) opened the race for the BC women, while Holly Henry (Victoria) made the largest gain to pass then second-placed Alberta, while Hannah Henry’s (Victoria) strong running sealed the silver.
On the water, the women’s four of Rachel Bond (Duncan), Ivy Quaintance (Victoria), Gemma Kerr (Victoria) and Emily Whitaker (Duncan) brought home gold in a time of 2:54.13. The women’s pair of Emma Ayres (Victoria) and Quaintance won gold in the pair in a time of 3:05.40. Emma Harrison (Langley) added a bronze for BC in the women’s single in a time of 3:10.90. The men’s quad brought in gold in a time of 2:26.29, while the women’s eight capped off a great day winning gold in 2:38.41.
Out at Fort McMurray Golf Course, Team BC’s Hannah Lee (Surrey) had an outstanding second round. The 15-year-old shot a 67, improving off yesterday’s 72. Lee leads the field of 17 with a two-round score of 139. Teammate Tiffany Kong (Vancouver) shot 72 in her second round to hold second-place with a two-round score of 145. Team BC is also in the lead on the men’s side after A.J. Ewart (Coquitlam) shot 74 to log a leading two-round score of 145 out of a field of 18. Team BC’s Tristan Mandur (Mill Bay) is in second after shooting the lowest round of the day, 72, and boasting a two-round score of 148. With their impressive performance, both the BC men and women win gold in the team medals. The golfers will play their third and final round tomorrow, Aug. 16, with individual title medals on the line.
In badminton, Alberta dealt BC their first loss, 7-2, despite a singles win from Jenna Wong (Surrey) and a doubles win from both Samantha Zheng (Vancouver) and Wong. BC will re-match against undefeated Alberta again tomorrow, Aug. 16, for gold at 8:30 a.m. at MacDonald Island Park.
BC earned their fourth win in men’s baseball today after beating Saskatchewan 6-2. Against Alberta BC came out on top, 7-4, to boast a 5-1 record following round-robin play. BC will play for gold tomorrow, Aug. 16, at 12:00 p.m. at Shell Place.
Wrapping up pool play Team BC women’s soccer beat Saskatchewan 4-0 to book their ticket to the final as the leaders of Pool A. The men’s soccer team also cross-over as the top seed of their pool with a 1-0 win over Saskatchewan today. The gold-medal games will take place on Aug. 16 at 12:30 p.m. for the both the men and women.
In softball, the Team BC women beat Alberta 4-0, Manitoba 10-0 and Saskatchewan 9-2 to secure their spot in the finals with a 7-1 record.
Team BC women’s volleyball won, 3-0, over Manitoba with scores of 25-16, 25-15, and 25-18. In their cross-over match against Saskatchewan, BC took the first two sets, while Sask came back with two wins to send it to a fifth. BC won the fifth set 15-12 to take the match and finish second in their pool. BC will play Alberta in the final on Aug. 16 at 10:45 a.m.
In men’s volleyball BC concluded round-robin play beating Northwest Territories easily in three sets, while in their cross-over against Saskatchewan they won 3-0 taking the game 25-19 in the third set. BC will now play in the gold-medal game on Aug. 16 at 12:30 p.m. at Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre.
Team BC continues to lead in the medal standings with 120 gold, 77 silver, and 62 bronze for a total of 260 medals, surpassing the total medals collected at the 2011 Western Canada Summer Games. Sunday is the final day of competition in Wood Buffalo.
