Golden Gymnasts

The first day of gymnastics competition began today at MacDonald Island Park with the Men’s Team and All-Around events. The stands filled quickly with family, friends, fellow Team BC athletes, as well as members of the public who were eager to watch the best in the west and learn more about the sport.

The boys earned a Gold in the Men’s Team event, over Alberta’s Silver and Saskatchewan’s Bronze. In the All-Around competition, Team BC gymnasts topped the podium again with Cohen Kiers (Abbotsford) earning a second Gold (75.00) and Dawson Friesen (Abbotsford) earning a Silver (72.70). Kiers and Friesen train together at Twisters Gymnastics Club in Abbotsford with coach Ken Ikeda, the brother of the men’s coach here in Wood Buffalo, Richard Ikeda. The boys were thrilled with their team performance today, and Treyson Cerrato exclaimed that he felt like a ‘rockstar’! The top individual performers on today’s events have qualified for the Men’s Apparatus Finals on Tuesday. Monday, the women will have their chance to compete in the Team and All-Around competitions starting at 1:00pm.
