Baseball takes win over Quebec to finish fifth
To start the 5th/6th placement game, Quebec got a couple of runs off of starter Travis Mcdougall (Abbotsford), but BC was able to rally back after Jayden Knight (Langley) got a walk, a steal, and then was driven home by Joshua Laukannen (Nanaimo) on a clutch single. The next inning, BC rode the strength of back-to-back doubles to add another pair of runs.
After the sixth inning, the skies opened and heavy rain came down and the teams were ushered off the field. There was a very small crew responsible for setting up tarps over the pitchers mound and home plate, but before they could even begin to unroll the tarps, BC athletes ran onto the field to assist. They did so with smiles and laughter despite the situation. Throughout the rain delay they also did a few other things to entertain the fans, including a few encouraging Quebec to join them in the outfield for a few sprint+slide races. They also put some string around a bat and pretended to fish in the growing lake around second base.
After about 45 minutes, the players were sent home and Baseball Canada later decided to call the game. BC got the win in 6 innings.
Jayden Knight (Langley) had 3 hits, 2 runs and an RBI to pace BC at the plate. Tate Dearin (Surrey) got the win, pitching 3 innings in relief.
With this win, BC finishes fifth in the tournament. A special thanks goes out to the coaching staff: Head Coach Cav Whitely, and assistant coaches Jamie Bodaly and Brooks McNiven.
