Message from the Honourable Coralee Oakes
Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development
From all accounts, the 2015 Canada Winter Games were an undeniable success and I know these Games will be talked about for years to come as one of the most memorable moments in people’s lives.
Being part of something this special, when Canadians come together from all walks of life to celebrate sport and culture, really is life changing. I will not soon forget the spirit of camaraderie, goodwill and community pride I felt during my time at the Games. Seeing the thousands of volunteers in their striking green jackets helping to make fans, supporters and athletes feel welcome in Prince George was particularly moving.
And then there was the pure joy of watching Team BC athletes compete for top honours against Canada’s best and brightest athletes. There were too many inspiring performances to count, both on and off the field of play. As members of Team BC, you made us all so proud, thrilling us with an impressive number of podium finishes on home soil, and simply being great ambassadors for this province. Congratulations and thank you to all of you.
I would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Kelly Mann and BC Games Society staff, and all those involved in supporting Team BC, including Chef de Mission Rob Needham, Assistant Chef Michelle Collens and mission staff volunteers. The Government of British Columbia is grateful for your efforts and the significant contribution you have made to the province’s sport sector.
Sincerely,
Coralee Oakes
Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development
A Special Thanks
Earlier this week, we received this wonderful letter of thanks from our Men’s Curling Team. From your Team BC mission staff and the BC Games Society, thank YOU Team Tardi. It is so nice to know that the work we do can have such a positive and meaningful impact on the lives of our athletes and coaches.
Here is a short exerpt from Team Tardi's thank you letter...
Being a part of the 2015 Canada Winter Games and being part of the host team was such an exciting experience. Nicholas, Sterling and I had the opportunity to participate in the BC Summer Games and Winter Games but for Tim, playing in a Games was a first time experience. We all had the time of our lives. Being a part of the Canada Games reminded me of what it was like when Vancouver hosted the 2010 Olympic Games – it was electric!
We appreciate the time, funding and effort put into organizing and hosting this event. The volunteers in Prince George were amazing. They went out of their way to help and support us and to make sure that we had everything we needed. We are grateful for the time, effort and the incredible work that everyone did to make this event successful. We tried to thank every volunteer that we saw, because we know an event of this proportion is not possible without the help of many volunteers.
We would also like to acknowledge and thank all of the mission staff. They were such a great support system for not only our curling team, but for the entire Team BC. We value their input and their enthusiasm and they truly helped us feel like we were part of the bigger Team BC.
We were a true BC team, coming together from all over the province – from Fort St. John, Victoria, Surrey and Coquitlam. We formed this team with the sole intent to do BC proud at the 2015 Canada Winter Games and we are proud we accomplished this goal. Now we go our separate ways, but we all intend to continue to be competitive curlers and have been inspired to reach for our dreams. Thank-you for giving us the inspiration to reach for the stars. We hope to continue competing with the ultimate goal of making our home cities, British Columbia AND Canada proud.
Athlete Certificates
The Canada Games Council recognizes the hard work, preparation and dedication each and every athlete puts in to each and every competition. To honour every athlete, a digital certificate will be e-mailed out that can be printed. Keep an eye on your e-mails for this certificate, or follow up with your mission staff after the Games – participating amongst the best athletes across Canada in these Games is quite a substantial accomplishment – Team BC is proud of you all!
Now that you are home, take a minute to look back at all of the Team BC news, photos and videos from the 2015 Canada Winter Games.
