Tuesday was another big day for Team BC’s cross country skiers as they posted five podium performances, that in addition to the three medals the team earned on Monday.
Colin Ferrie of Kimberley won his first medal of the Games, skiing to gold in the 1.5km classic sprint.
“I’ve never really thought of myself as much of a sprinter, always more of a distance skier,” said the 21-year-old racer. “So I was definitely really relaxed going into the race, not expecting too much, and I think in the end, that kind of helped me. It’s an amazing feeling right now. It’s hard to describe. I’m over the moon really.”
Ferrie competed in the 2011 Canada Winter Games in Halifax and the opportunity to race at home in B.C. was a special honour.
“I was hoping to get a chance to race at home and then to win gold here is just phenomenal.”
Four B.C. para cross country skiers also made the trip to the podium on Tuesday, and for three of them, it marked their second medals of the 2015 Games.
Revelstoke’s Emily Suchy won her second gold medal, this time in the 800m sit-ski sprint. Emily Weekes of North Vancouver won her second silver in the 1.2km standing sprint. Burnaby’s Andy Lin can now add a silver medal to his gold medal from Monday; Lin was second in the 1.2km standing sprint.
Pemberton skier Ethan Hess, 15, won his first Canada Winter Games medal in the 800m sit-ski event, he finished in third place.
Team BC’s badminton teams are moving on to three bronze medal games tomorrow. James Ho (singles male), Qingzi Ouyang (singles female), and the team of Joshua Liu and Duncan Yao will compete for bronze in the doubles male event.
In squash, Team BC’s Michelle Garceau (Surrey) beat the number one seed to advance to the individual gold medal match. Matthew Toth (Richmond) and Gavin Maxwell (Victoria) both lost in the semi finals so will play each other tomorrow for the bronze medal. Team BC also remains undefeated in team pool play for both men and women.
In table tennis, Team BC’s boys, girls doubles teams have advanced to the gold medal matches and the mixed doubles team will play for bronze.
The first ever Canada Winter Games trampoline event got underway with the individual competition. Team BC’s Poppy Quinlan (Maple Ridge) was the highest finisher in fourth place.
The women’s curling team defeated the Yukon by a score of 10-2 on Tuesday and remain undefeated in pool play.
B.C.’s men’s hockey team played Team Ontario on Tuesday night. After back and forth scorning kept the game close in the first two periods, Ontario pulled ahead in the third with the final score 6-4.
Team BC goes Pink
Wednesday, February 25 is Pink Shirt Day in British Columbia, and Team BC – including athletes, coaches and mission staff - will be sporting pink shirts instead of our normal blue, as a way to take a stand against bullying and to raise awareness of this important campaign.
Team BC spearheads legacy projects to make a lasting social impression in the communities hosting the Canada Games. Research shows that involvement in sport and leadership actives reduces the occurrence of bullying and as role models and leaders in their sport and in their home communities, Team BC athletes and coaches are and are proud to help spread the message that bullying will not be tolerated.
So wear your pink and wear it proud and be sure to take your picture and share it on social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) with #TBCGoesPink and #PinkItForward. For every use of #PinkItForward, $1 will be donated by Coast Capital Savings to Pink Shirt Day, funding anti-bullying programs in BC.
