If the practice round at Club de Golf Milby is any indication, the golf competition at the Canada Games is lining up to be an exciting event. On Tuesday, Team BC athlete Kevin Kwon (Maple Ridge) scored his first-ever hole in one. Not to be outdone, an hour later, Kevin’s friend and teammate on the Team Canada Development Squad, Hugo Bernard (Quebec), scored his own ace.
The two were paired together in round one Wednesday, and though there was no repeat performance of their aces, both had solid rounds shooting one under 72 and sit in a three-way tie for third.
Kevin is fresh off his win at the recent Canadian Junior Championships and is definitely one to watch as competition continues through to Saturday. Also competing for Team BC are Mark Valliere (Courtenay) who is the co-leader after round one shooting 70 and Trevor Yu (Vancouver) who is tied with Kevin and Hugo at 72.
The women’s team had a strong start with Taylor Kim (Surrey) coming in as the day one leader at 72. Naomi Ko (Victoria) shot 77 and Alexandra Kong (West Vancouver) finished with a 79.
