 BC CONTINUES WEEK TWO SUCCESS AT CANADA WINTER GAMES
Halifax, NS (February 22, 2011) -- BC's cross country and para nordic athletes had a great showing in the sprint races at the Canada Winter Games Tuesday, netting two Silver and one Gold medal at Ski Martock.

Courtney Knight (Burnaby) and guide Andrea Bundon (Vancouver) earned their second Silver medal of the Games in the 800m Sprint Ski. Also earning his second Silver of the Games was Asquith (Lour) Gibson (Langley) in the 800m sprint sit-ski men's race.  Alysson Marshall (Enderby) also became a double medallist by winning cross country 1200m sprint.

Cold temperatures and high winds prevailed at Ski Wentworth where the alpine athletes continued training for tomorrow's start to their competiton, and para alpine raced the combined time two-run slalom race. Braydon Luscombe (Duncan) won Silver in that event.

Team BC Table Tennis athletes claimed victory in all ten of their matches Tuesday. In women's doubles, Shirley Fu (Burnaby) and Michelle Liaw (Vancouver) ping ponged their way to convincing straight game wins over Newfoundland/Labrador and Saskatchewan.  In mixed doubles Mike Yue (Burnaby) combined forces with TianXaio (Terri) Zhou (Vancouver) to defeat Newfoundland/Labrador, Alberta and Saskatchewan. After their victory over the higher ranked Alberta team, Coach Chandra Madhosingh (Vancouver ) gushed about the BC pair. "They played very well together today. Mike attacked the ball every chance he had and Terri played very smart, consistently using her top spin both cross court and down the line".

Badminton was into quarter-final and semi-final play at the Canada Games Centre Tuesday where several Team BC athletes have assured themselves of a medal Wednesday. In mixed doubles Nathan Choi (Vancouver) and Christin Tsai (Richmond), seeded 5/8, upset 3/4 seeds Darren Hong and Adrianna Guiffre of Alberta in the quarter-finals, and guaranteed themselves a medal by defeating number two seeds Nyl Yakura and Alex Bruce of Ontario 21-17, 21-15.

BC's female hockey team improved their record to one win and two losses after a convincing 4-0 win over Newfoundland & Labrador yesterday at the Dartmouth Sportsplex.

Team BC has brought a dedicated team of 242 athletes, 74 coaches, three National Artists and 22 mission staff to the Games in Halifax. Approximately 2,700 athletes, coaches, managers and officials have come to the Games from every province and territory in Canada.

The Canada Games is a national multi-sport Games competition that brings together the best athletes from each Canadian province and territory. The primary objective of the Games and the Games movement is national and provincial sport development of Canadian youth.
