Day 10 - Daily Digest (Feb. 27)

Monday, Feb. 27, 2023

Training got underway on Monday as week two BC athletes settled into PEI 2023 Canada Games Athletes Village at the University of Prince Edward Island.

In the only action of the day for Team BC on Monday, women’s hockey beat Saskatchewan 11-1 to start off on a strong note.

We talked to athletes about their impressions of PEI, settling into the Athletes Village and their first training sessions.

Team BC Talks

Lola Brouillette (Nelson) | Boxing | on being at the Athletes‘ Village
“It‘s insane. The experience is something else and it‘s definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I love it, especially my roommates. They are really cool.  I actually learned quite a bit from their sports. I am rooming with curling, archery and hockey athletes.”

Kailash Raju (Pitt Meadows) | Boxing | on the first day of training at the Canada Games
“I was a bit limited in getting the practising in today, but I still got the work in. I am focused on what I need to do.”

Adam Michael Fenton (Port Coquitlam) | Curling (X) | on the debut of mixed doubles curling at the Games and first training session
“Mixed doubles curling just came into the Canada Games, so it‘s really exciting to be a part of the Games and being here in PEI.  We had a pre-event practice today, feeling out the ice and getting draw weight. The ice was fast and curling hard. The officials were talking to us and giving us the rundown on how the event will be run. We are feeling ready for our first game tomorrow.”

Linda Price (Mission) | Head coach | Archery | on being at the competition venue at the Canada Games for training
’The venue is amazing. They‘ve done a really good job. We were really impressed with everything they set up. All of our equipment arrived. We had a great start of our program by practicing today to get used to the venue and the lighting. We are excited.”

Nathan Thiel (Abbotsford) | Judo| on adjusting to the weather in PEI and being at the Canada Games
“It‘s cold, especially at night time, my hair freezes. I am happy to be here. I want to experience everything.”

Raphael Gaanan | Burnaby | Judo | on training at the judo venue at the PEI Convention Centre, instead of a gym or arena setting
“It‘s different this time. We‘re in a hotel. The fact that I‘ve been able to do it right by the ocean, with all the nice views makes it even better. The venue is amazing. The volunteers are awesome.”

Ivan Lu (Vancouver) | Fencing | on travelling across the country for the Games
“It‘s very exciting. I‘ve come all this way to PEI across the continent. So it‘s very different and very new. I like it here very much. The hospitality here is amazing.”

On a Games volunteer offering to sew a team badge on his uniform
“One of the volunteers was nice enough to take it home and sew it on for me. They‘re giving it to me tomorrow.”

Kevin Zhu (Vancouver) | Fencing | on the first day of training after the cross-country flight
“It was good, but it was tiring. I haven‘t trained for a few days, so it was good to get to the venue. I‘m ready to go.”

Tosh Krauskopf (Smithers) | Snowboarding (slopestyle) | on the first official  training at the venue
“It looked great when we got there. I was super stoked to ride the course. It‘s too bad that the winds made it difficult to hit the big jumps. We had to ride the smaller ones. But it was fun.”  On being in Atlantic Canada. It‘s crazy. I never imagined coming to PEI. It‘s a great place. I‘m glad the Canada Games brought me here.”
