It was a heartbreaking loss for Team BC, who appeared to be on their way to a win over the host Alberta.
Tied 4-4 with 28 seconds left in the game an Alberta forward managed to squeeze by the BC defence in tight to the net and put the puck past goalie Thomas Milic (Coquitlam).
"I thought our kids battled hard and when you take the two penalties late, it is going to cost you and that is what happened." said coach Steve O'Rourke. "This is just a round-robin and we added an extra game. It doesn't change what we are doing. The kids have learned something every game. Game 1 against Manitoba, we played a great first period then didn't play two periods after that. We played a good game against Saskatchewan and tonight we played one good period, we weren't great in the second and I thought we were fine in the third."
Team BC was leading 2-0 after the first period with goals from Steel Quiring (Vernon) and Ty Gibson (Victoria).
In the middle frame Graham Sward got on the board for BC, however Alberta put two past the goalie to make it 3-2 as they headed into the third period.
Team BC struck again within the first minute of the third period to give them a 4-2 lead.
It was late in the game when Alberta put the game-tying goal on the board and took that momentum to continue to pressure BC, scoring the game winner with 28 seconds remaining.
Team BC now plays on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
"The biggest thing is getting in that routine and being ready and prepared to do the same thing again. We want the same energy we had tonight and just continue to execute," said O'Rourke.
