Speed Skating Announces athletes selected to Team BC

Speed Skating Announces athletes selected to Team BC
Through the qualification process “Racing to Red Deer (R2RD)” Program, BC Speed Skating Association has named the Team BC Athletes who will compete in Short Track and Long Track Speed Skating at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, AB. 

The Team BC Long Track Selection Trials took place December 7-9, 2018 in Fort St. John. A number of athletes took part and competed for their chance to represent the province in Red Deer next year. In addition, the Short Track Selection Trials took place in Red Deer, Alberta on October 13 and 14th. There were 11 females and 13 males competing for a spot on the short track team and 7 females and 11 males competing at the long track trials.

“The Canada Games are an important milestone in the speed skating athlete’s pathway, and we are proud of all the athletes who competed for a spot on Team BC. We feel that Team BC is poised for success in Red Deer, and these athletes named to the team are ready to compete,” said Chris Acton, Technical Director at BC Speed Skating Association. “Congratulations to all the athletes.”

Canada Games Speed Skating History
Long track speed skating was part of the initial Canada Games program in 1967, although there was no competition at the 1987 and 1991 Games. Although short track speed skating started in Canada in the early 1900s, it did not become an Olympic medal sport until 1992. Canadian speed skaters have won more medals at the past five Olympic Games than any other winter sport and earned an impressive 10 medals in 2010. It has been a part of the Canada Games program since 1983.

About the Canada Games 
The Canada Games are a national multi-sport competition with participation from every province and territory in Canada. The Games are held every two years, alternating between winter and summer. The 2019 Canada Winter Games will be held February 15 to March 3 in Red Deer, bringing together approximately 3600 athletes, coaches, and managers from every province and territory to compete in 19 sports.
