Smiles and a win for Team BC women as they begin placing round
Team British Columbia 6 Team Prince Edward Island 0

Summary

On a cool and windy Wednesday evening in Winnipeg, BC bounced back from a tough quarter-final loss to defeat PEI 6-0 in the placing semifinal. BC had their way with the islanders from the opening kickoff, and will now face a hostile hometown crowd when they play Manitoba for 5th place Thursday afternoon.

Unlike their previous matches, BC managed to get on the board early against PEI when Teagan Mackay (North Vancouver) netted her second goal of the tournament in the 4th minute of play. With the field slanted in one direction, BC established a comfortable 3-0 lead going into halftime on goals from Madeline More (Port Moody) and Mackay’s second of the game. The second 40 saw more of the same from BC with scores from Julia Grosso (Vancouver), Saje Brar (Surrey), and centre-back Reece Moffat (Langley).

“Since we lost games we should’ve won, we got all the goals we kind of deserved,” said Grosso after the game, when describing how the team was able come back with such a strong offensive performance. “We were hungry. We want to end strong just to represent BC.”

Thursday’s match up pits BC against the Canada Games hosts who defeated Saskatchewan 2-1 earlier in the day. Kickoff is 13:00 (CDT), August 3, at Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex.
